For Sara de Blas

  • I reached out to Sara de Blas not long after discovering her work for the first time. It felt free, liberating, alive — like something in me suddenly unlocked and finally had the push it needed to explore deeper. That quiet (or loud?) moment when you think, who are these pressures for anyway? Fuck it. I’ll do what I want to do now.

A few months later, I was on a plane to meet her in Mallorca, where she’s from. I had swum in that sea twice before — the first time on my very first solo trip right out of law school. That, too, was a liberating milestone in my life and the beginning of so many travel stories. Writing this, I realize those three weeks had also quietly rekindled my relationship with photography. Almost ten years ago now. Time really does fly.

Sara welcomed me into her home, and in a strange way, it felt like I had returned home too. “No expectations,” she told me. Suddenly, her work made perfect sense.

She gave me full freedom to assist however I wanted, so I jumped into the unknown with my Rolleiflex — the first wedding I ever documented on 6×6 medium-format film. I met my true medium that day.

    “No expectations,” she said.

    No expectations.
